Waste to Energy Program
VVWRA's Waste to Energy program is providing clean, renewable energy for our community.
VVWRA has a partnership with Anaergia and Southwest Gas on an innovative renewable natural gas project. VVWRA's three original anaerobic digesters had sat unused for about ten years. They recently underwent extensive upgrades and are now being used to digest food waste that is trucked to our facility.
The resulting biogas produced by the waste is cleaned to natural gas standards and then injected into a major Southwest Gas pipeline that runs through VVWRA property. The gas scrubbing facility is run by So Cal Biomethane, a subsidiary of Anaergia. It cleans the biogas to renewable natural gas standards so it can be used in homes and businesses just like traditional natural gas.
Cal Recycle Grant Will Bring Improvements to RNG Program
A $4 million dollar grant from Cal Recycle is allowing VVWRA and Anaergia to make improvements to our award winning RNG program, specifically at the food waste delivery point. A new storage tank has been installed to expand our capacity for accepting liquified food waste. And a polishing system will be installed in September to help remove trash and other debris that is found in the food waste that can damage our equipment.
The finishing touches are being put on a large food waste storage tank (l). It is the fourth storage tank at our facility. A food waste polishing system (r) is expected to be installed soon to improve the quality of material in our digesters and protect our equipment from damage.
